This walk takes place Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in the neighborhood of Testaccio where we will see, smell and taste seasonal ingredients including fruit, vegetables, meats and cheeses at one of Rome’s most well known outdoor markets. At the ex-slaughterhouse, we will talk about the quinto quarto (the fifth quarter) more widely known as offal and its role in Roman cuisine. We will visit a pasta shop, bakeries and delis where we will sample olive oil and balsamic vinegar. What was once the Roman Jews’ fish market, and for some time even a taxi cab deposit, has been destined since 2009 to house one of Rome’s most interesting, genuine and popular farmer’s markets. The Mercato di Campagna Amica located on Via di San Teodoro, a few steps from the majestic and beautiful ruins of the Circus Maximus of Ben Hur fame, showcases the products of local farmers and producers of Lazio – the region of which Rome is capital – with about 60 stalls among local bakers, butchers, fishmongers and fresh local fruit and vegetable producers. On site also a renowned craft beer brewer, wine seller, porchetta sandwich sellers, cheese makers and other local delights. At the market, after a coffee and a sweet treat, we browse vendors and discuss the seasonal produce calendar, introducing food lovers to local purveyors, encouraging conversation, and tasting delicacies. The tour ends with a short walk to the fascinating Rome Ghetto, the place responsible for much of the cultural structure, local cuisine and eating tradition of the Eternal City. This walk takes place on Sunday.
